Edge, cloud or hybrid video analytics? Cost, privacy and data laws explained
A practical comparison of where to run AI video analytics, and how privacy rules in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Australia affect the choice.
Three ways to run the analysis
| Option | Best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| On-premise / edge | Video must stay on site, bandwidth is limited, or reaction must be instant. | Hardware to buy and maintain at each site. |
| Cloud | Many small sites, good internet, and a preference for no on-site hardware. | Upload bandwidth and where the data is stored. |
| Hybrid | Analysis at the edge, with events, snapshots and reports in a central dashboard. | Two environments to manage, usually by the vendor. |
Privacy is a design decision
Many analytics, such as counting, heatmaps, PPE and intrusion, do not need to know who a person is. Designing for anonymous detections first, and adding identification only where there is a clear purpose and legal basis, reduces risk from the start.
- Keep only what you need: events and snapshots, not weeks of extra footage.
- Restrict who can view video and log every access.
- Use clear signage where cameras and analytics are in use.
- Treat face recognition as a separate decision with its own consent and retention rules.
The legal landscape in our markets
Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), Egypt’s Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020 and Australia’s Privacy Act 1988 all treat images that identify people as personal data, and include rules on purpose, security and, in some cases, transfers outside the country. Requirements differ and change over time, so confirm your obligations with a legal adviser before deploying identification features.
Questions to ask any vendor
- Where exactly is video processed and where is it stored?
- Can we run fully on-premise if needed?
- What leaves our network, and is it encrypted?
- How long are events and snapshots retained, and can we change it?
Questions we often hear
Is cloud video analytics secure?
It can be, with encryption in transit and at rest, access control and a clear data location. If policy requires video to stay on site, choose on-premise or hybrid.
Which option is cheapest?
It depends on the number of cameras and sites. Edge has higher upfront hardware cost; cloud has ongoing bandwidth and compute cost. Hybrid often balances both for multi-site networks.
